Potato dreams of America

Lena et son fils de 9 ans, affectueusement appelé Potato, tentent d’échapper à la dure réalité de leur Vladivostok natal après la chute de l’Union soviétique en regardant des films américains. Emportée par le fantasme d’une vie meilleure, Lena décide de se marier par correspondance avec un Américain afin qu’elle et Potato puissent s’installer aux États-Unis. Arrivés à Seattle pour vivre avec John, le nouveau mari de Lena, Potato et Lena réalisent que l’Amérique regorge de surprises.

Lena and her 9-year-old son, affectionately called Potato, try to escape the harsh reality of their native city of Vladivostok after the fall of the Soviet Union by watching American movies. Carried away by the fantasy of a better life, Lena decides to marry an American by mail order so that she and Potato can move to the United States. When they arrive in Seattle to live with Lena’s new husband, John, Potato and Lena realise that America is full of surprises.

Biographie WES HURLEY

Wes Hurley is a Russian-born and raised, Seattle-based filmmaker. He has made two feature films, dozens of shorts and 2 seasons of a critically acclaimed comedy series Capitol Hill (starring Jinkx Monsoon, BenDeLaCreme, Waxie Moon and Robbie Turner). Hurley is a recipient of Creative Award, Seattle Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture Award, Advocate Magazine’s Person to Watch and City Arts Magazine’s Artist of the Year. His autobiographical short doc Little Potato (co-directed with Nathan Miller) won dozens of awards including the Oscar-qualifying Jury Prize at SXSW. It was also nominated for Year’s Best Short by The Wrap, Vimeo and CinemaEye. Hurley’s story and his work has been featured on BBC, NPR, The Atlantic, Vice, Out, The Wrap, Huffington Post, The Advocate and Topic among others.

Wes Hurley est un cinéaste né et élevé en Russie, qui vit à Seattle. Il a réalisé deux longs métrages, des dizaines de courts métrages et deux saisons d’une série comique intitulée Capitol Hill, acclamée par la critique (avec Jinkx Monsoon, BenDeLaCreme, Waxie Moon et Robbie Turner).
